Dayton, Ohio -- JCPenney, a provider of consumer retail catalog sales, has installed an $11 million NCR data warehouse decision support system. The system runs NCR's Teradata relational database management system (RDBMS), on NCR's WorldMark massively parallel processing (MPP) servers. The installation consists of one 10 node WorldMark 5100M server operating as a production system and one three node WorldMark 5100M server as the development system. "This is a solution that scales to support the complexity of the queries we run on over two terabytes of data within acceptable performance parameters," said Dave Evans, senior vice president of Information Systems at Plano, Texas-based JCPenney. "The combination of NCR's massively parallel WorldMark hardware architecture and its Teradata database enables us to use business data that we collect every day to better serve and expand our customer base." The NCR installation began in June and entered production in September as an integrated part of JCPenney's "lights out" data center that has been designed to function with minimal staffing requirements. The decision support system will initially be used by several hundred JCPenney users. NCR Professional Services consultants migrated the application, making improvements in the process. These included a complete replacement of the data warehouse update procedures, using standard Teradata utilities that take advantage of Teradata's parallel processing features.
