Big Blue, long regarded as a barometer of corporate technology spending, reported its quarterly earnings ahead of schedule and the results slightly surpassed Wall Street’s expectations. The IBM report, analysts said, might be an early sign that the corporate sector outside of banking is withstanding the turmoil in the financial markets better than had been expected.
