When researcher Scott Bugenhagen turns on his virtual rat, he doesn’t see an animated avatar. The Medical College of Wisconsin graduate student sees a long string of mathematical equations on his computer screen that capture some of the workings of the genetic sequence of a real-life rodent. Bugenhagen is among a growing number of scientists, engineers and inventors in southeastern Wisconsin using these powerful computers to find cures, refine manufacturing and create new products.
