By implementing an IaaS and PaaS framework, Intel was able to realize rather dramatic results in their server utilization rate, which was at 59 percent in early 2006 and now stands at around 80 percent. Because of this new approach the company was able to avoid investing in new data centers and all of the associated costs that exist outside of mere construction. In 2009 Intel took their initial framework one step further and built an enterprise private cloud for its R&D office and enterprise groups which they expect to save them close to $200 million–even though it’s not clear what period of time that savings will take to accumulate.
