Determining which cloud platform is best suited for your application set is almost always a trial-and-error process. But Duke University computers scientists Xiaowei Yang and Ang Li and Srikanth Kandula and Ming Zhang of Microsoft Research have built a set of tools that allow prospective customers to compare performance of different cloud platforms without actually having to port their applications up-front. Performance results can be joined with the platform’s pricing model that can be used to build a business case for cloud migration. So far, the researchers have applied their tools to six of the most popular providers: Amazon, Microsoft, Google, GoGrid, RackSpace and CloudSites.
