This has been a big news week on the open source front with the release of OpenStack, a partnership between NASA and Rackspace and signifies that there might be bigger changes on the horizon for the cloud industry as a whole as the business models begin opening up. This morning Canonical announced that it would be providing an opportunity for enterprises to step onto the cloud through their new virtual appliance, which is a bundle comprised of Ubuntu Linux with IBM’s DB2 Express-C database for Amazon’s EC2 public cloud. The free appliance is not limited to EC2 as it can also be deployed in a private cloud enviornment featuring Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04.
