VMware Supports Singapore Agency Cloud Move

Nicole Hemsoth

This July the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Singapore will be home to a 200-researcher strong private cloud system that will address the shortfall in computational access.

According to Tan Hoon Chiang, CIO for NIE, “As most research projects require servers for a short timeframe of about one year, this has resulted in server sprawl after some time.”

Chiang went on to explain the value for computational resource-strapped researchers, saying that “By setting up a self-service environment with automated provisioning capability, NIE can resolve these challenges faced by the dynamic research community in NIE.”

The cloud will be underpinned by the virtualization technology of VMware, which will back the organization’s plans to move entirely to an IT-as-a-Service model. Tan says he hopes to move all of NIE’s IT to a virtualized environment, a task that would include shifting their Oracle and Microsoft systems to the cloud by 2014.
