Nanyang Technological University Lead Computing Performance
On May 20, the first day of ASC15 Student Supercomputer Challenge in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, China, the team of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) from Singapore accomplished impressive high performance on floating point computing with the rate of 11.92 Tflop/s and broke the world record under 3000W power budget.
The team members of NTU adopted hybrid heterogeneous acceleration technology in designing their supercomputing system in the finals, totally employing 7 supercomputing server nodes provided by Inspur and 8 Nvidia K80 accelerated cards. In the regular HPL computing performance testing, the consecutive floating point computation of this system achieved 11.92 Tflop/s , breaking the world record of 10.1 Tflop/s, which was made by University of Edinburgh from Britain in ISC14 supercomputer contest held in German.
In the ASC14, the NTU team showed outstanding abilities and was the Silver Winner, even though it was the first time for it to participate in ASC. Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Singapore specially wrote a congratulatory message on his Facebook for that.
Mr. Liu Jun, member of ASC committee and the General Manager of Inspur HPC, believes that ASC student supercomputer contest has a high requirement for participating students, include supercomputing knowledge structure, practical ability, understanding of new technology and innovative thinking. The stable and outstanding performance of NTU in two consecutive years, to some degree, reflects that Singapore has paid high attention to the cultivation of supercomputing talents. At the same time, it proves the great value of ASC contest in promoting the cultivation of young supercomputing talents.
ASC15 is co-organized by Inspur Group, Taiyuan University of Technology, and Asia Supercomputer Committee. It is the largest supercomputer contest in the world since there are 152 teams from 135 universities across six continents. The 16 universities teams worldwide such as Tsinghua University, Nanyang Technological University, MIT Green Team and Ural Federal University successfully passed the preliminary round and were listed in the final contest, which is held in Taiyuan University of Technology from May 18 to May 22, 2015.
