Singapore-based Scalable Systems Pte Ltd and Paris-based Bull announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to optimize and support the Scalable Rocks software suite on Bull NovaScale servers. The Scalable Rocks suite will be integrated within the NovaScale server platform to deliver solutions to the high-performance computing market. Both companies will work together to address customer requirements for high-end, scalable HPC solutions.

Bull NovaScale servers deliver performance leadership the HPC market and we continuously seek to improve the breadth of solutions offered to our customers. Scalable Rocks is a recognized platform for cluster management with strong manageability and usability. Our relationship will ensure a smooth integration of Rocks-based clusters into our NovaScale platform." said Jean-Francois Lavignon, HPC General Manager at Bull.
"We are very excited about our collaboration with Bull. It will provide Scalable Systems access to the deep HPC expertise in Bull and at the same time enable us to work on one of the most scalable Intel Itanium 2 platforms available today," said Laurence Liew, CTO of Scalable Systems. "The Bull NovaScale platform, when fully integrated with Scalable Rocks, will offer Bull's partners and customers an easy to manage and fully supported cluster system based on the popular open source Rocks cluster distribution."
Scalable Systems has been a co-developer of open source Rocks since 2001 and has contributed to several open source and commercial Rocks Rolls since that date. Scalable Rocks is based on Rocks cluster software, developed both by the Grid and Cluster Computing Group at San Diego Supercomputer Centre and its collaborators.
The Bull NovaScale Attitude program, which Scalable Systems has recently joined, has been providing ISVs with the opportunity to port, test and optimize their solutions on the NovaScale platform. Bull is also a founding sponsor of the Itanium Solutions Alliance, an industry initiative aimed at expanding the Itanium ecosystem.
Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
