ONStor Inc., a provider of high-performance scalable NAS gateways for multi-vendor storage, has won two "Toigos" for its high-throughput Bobcat 2280 NAS Gateway. ONStor was awarded both "Best Product in the Network-Attached Storage Market" and "Product of the Year" in the annual awards presented by Enterprise Systems.
From the list of winners, which also included "Best Product in the Enterprise Storage Market," "Best Product in the IP Storage Market," "Best Integrated Storage Management Software Suite," "Most Promising Archive Manager," "Best Backup Reporting Tool," among others, the publication singled out ONStor's Bobcat as the overall Product of the Year.
Enterprise Systems' evaluation of ONStor's Bobcat 2280 said, "Equipped with an extra network processor optimized to provide a DMA-like channel between its storage processor and its network processor, Bobcat expedites read requests and data delivery. It's the reason why ONStor was selected by Yahoo! over long-installed Network Appliance for its streaming media service. I am also fond of ONStor's storage-agnostic approach. Their NAS head can sit in front of arrays and FC fabrics from any manufacturer and when you deploy a lot of them, you still have a single point of management. Good packaging and a good price."
The ONStor Bobcat 2280 combines the a scalable NAS gateway platform with a high-performance file data streaming engine that delivers accelerated performance for content-rich application environments. Target markets for the Bobcat 2280 NAS Gateways include streaming media and content delivery, as well as applications requiring large file read/writes including E-CAD, seismic data analysis, digital effects and processes associated with major manufacturing. The Bobcat 2280 includes the new FastPath streaming performance accelerator chip that enables 300 MB/sec sustained reads and 265 MB/sec sustained writes. Integrated n-way clustering capability allows aggregate throughput to grow linearly to 1.2 GB per second as NAS Gateways are added to the cluster.
Enterprise Systems' Product of the Year awards were selected by Jon William Toigo, a veteran with more than 20 years of IT operations and management experience both inside corporate IT organizations and as an external consultant, architect and integrator. Toigo is a noted author of 13 books on information technology, including what some critics regard as the Bible of storage technology -- The Holy Grail of Data Storage Management -- and several editions of Disaster Recovery Planning, a practical guide to contingency planning used by organizations throughout the world.

The world's largest supercomputers, like Tianhe-2, are great at traditional, compute-intensive HPC workloads, such as simulating atomic decay or modeling tornados. But data-intensive applications--such as mining big data sets for connections--is a different sort of workload, and runs best on a different sort of computer.
