June 12 -- PRACE, Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, awards a prize for an outstanding scientific paper submitted to ISC'08 by a European student or young scientist on petascaling. In addition, PRACE is presented in the conference programme, hosts a Birds-of-a-Feather session, and has an information booth in the exhibition.
The winner is selected by the ISC'08 Award Committee, headed by Michael Resch, High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart. Achim Bachem, Chairman of the Board Forschungszentrum Jülich and PRACE coordinator presents the PRACE Award at the ISC'08 opening ceremony in Dresden on Wednesday, 18 June. The winning student or young scientist will receive a sponsorship for the participation in a conference relevant to petascale computing.
This is the first time the prize is awarded. The PRACE Award will be continued in the years to come to encourage young European scientists to work on innovative solutions for petascale computing.
PRACE hosts a Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) session at ISC'08 on June 18 at 5:15 p.m. The session is led by Kimmo Koski, the Managing Director of CSC, the Finnish IT Center for Science. This BoF discusses the current developments in building the High Performance Computing Ecosystem in Europe. The major European grid projects, such as DEISA (Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications) and EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-sciencE), and the planned sustainable infrastructures, such as PRACE and EGI (European Grid Initiative), provide the building blocks for a pan-European collaboration. Policy work through e-IRG (e-Infrastructure Reflection Group) supports this development.
The PRACE coordinator, Prof. Dr. Achim Bachem, Forschungszentrum Jülich, presents the EU project in detail on June 19 at 9:00 a.m. and members of the PRACE project team are present during the exhibition (information stand number F05+F06) for further information.
The Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) prepares the creation of a persistent pan-European HPC service, consisting of several tier-0 centres providing European researchers with access to capability computers and forming the top level of the European HPC ecosystem. PRACE is a project funded in part by the EU's 7th Framework Programme.
