PRACE Hosts a BoF Session at ISC'08

June 12 -- PRACE, Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, hosts a Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) session "Building the HPC Ecosystem" at ISC'08. The session will take place in conference room 2, level 4 on Wednesday, June 18, at 6:00-6:45 p.m.

Building the HPC Ecosystem -BoF session discusses the current developments in constructing the European High Performance Computing (HPC) Ecosystem. The major European grid projects, such as Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications (DEISA) and Enabling Grids for E-sciencE (EGEE), and the planned sustainable infrastructures, such as the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) and European grid Initiative (EGI), provide the building blocks for the pan-European collaboration. Policy work through the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG) supports the development. Other essential parts of the ecosystem include the various user communities utilizing HPC resources and new research infrastructures visible in European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) roadmap. The Building the HPC Ecosystem -session discusses the integration and interoperability issues in providing HPC services and boosting the pan-European collaboration for the European research community.

Presentations and speakers:

Building the High-Performance Computing Ecosystem
Kimmo Koski, CSC - the Finnish IT Center for Science

Kimmo Koski is the Managing Director of the Finnish IT center for science, CSC. During the recent years he has been involved in European collaboration in High Performance Computing and grid activities, among them chairing the European strategy group for high-end computing (HPC in Europe Taskforce, HET). As one result of this group Petaflop computing was raised to European agenda, resulting for example the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) collaboration.

Towards a European HPC Infrastructure – DEISA
Stefan Heinzel, Max Planck Institute, Garching Germany

Stefan Heinzel is the Director of RZG of the Max Planck Society in Germany. Additionally became Technical Director of the German High Performance Computing Centre for Climate- and Earth System Research (DKRZ). Since 2008 he is coordinating the Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications (DEISA2) project in the European FP7 (Framework Programme 7).

Teragrid approach
Rob Pennington, National Center for Supercomputing Applications

Dr. Rob Pennington is the Deputy Director of NCSA and for the Blue Waters Petascale system at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also the director for the Innovative Systems Lab at NCSA, which focuses on the relevance of new technologies for HPC applications. He has been active in HPC for over 15 years and is an astronomer by training.

About PRACE

The Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) prepares the creation of a persistent pan-European HPC service, consisting of several tier-0 centres providing European researchers with access to capability computers and forming the top level of the European HPC ecosystem. PRACE is a project funded in part by the EU’s 7th Framework Programme. The PRACE project receives funding from the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n° RI-211528. www.prace-project.eu.

CERN, Google Drive Future of Global Science Initiatives

Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
