Mitrionics' Co-Founder Stefan Möhl to Present Seminar at SC

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 17 -- SC08 -- Mitrionics, Inc., developer of the Mitrion Virtual Processor and the Mitrion Software Acceleration Platform, today announced that its co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer Stefan Möhl will be presenting a seminar titled, "The Heterogeneous Future: Multi-Core Processors, Adaptable Processors, and Graphics Processors," at the Supercomputing 2008 Conference being held Nov. 15-21, 2008, in Austin, Texas. Mr. Möhl will discuss the technological challenges of performance acceleration and market opportunities as the industry evolves into heterogeneous computing. The presentation will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, in the Austin Convention Center. Mitrionics will be showing its Software Acceleration Platform and technology in booth #1738.

Presentation Description

The landscape of computer processors has changed dramatically in the last few years. The old sequential von Neumann architecture has finally run out of steam, resulting in a shift to parallel processing for all computer processors. At the same time, a new breed of computer accelerators has emerged. Developed in mass-market industries outside high performance computing (HPC) they have guaranteed support into the future, including continuous new generations of ever faster chips. Two prominent accelerators in this segment are FPGAs and GPUs. These three new compute devices, the Multi-Core CPU, the FPGA, and the GPU each have areas in which they are magnitudes more powerful than any of the others. To fully take advantage of the new opportunities for performance that are presented to us by these technologies requires a future of heterogeneous computing.

About Mitrionics

Founded in 2001 and privately held, Mitrionics offers accelerated hybrid computing solutions. The Mitrion Virtual Processor (MVP) and the Mitrion Software Acceleration Platform accelerate a wide range of computing applications by exploiting the massively parallel and limitless internal bandwidth of standard FPGA architectures. The company's products and services deliver a greener computing alternative, enabling 10x-100x performance increases and 90 percent less power consumption. Mitrionics' customers are focused on adopting hybrid computing architectures to meet the exponential rise of compute requirements without adding additional watts to the computer system. The most noted users of MVP come from the areas of genome informatics, internet data processing and business process optimization. Mitrionics has key industry partnerships with processor companies Intel, AMD, Xilinx, and Altera, systems vendors HP and SGI, and accelerator module suppliers XtremeData and Nallatech. Mitrionics is privately held and located in Lund, Sweden, and Los Gatos, Calif. Cray Cracks Commercial HPC Code

During a conversation this week with Cray CEO, Peter Ungaro, we learned that the company has managed to extend its reach into the enterprise HPC market quite dramatically--at least in supercomputing business terms. With steady growth into these markets, however, the focus on hardware versus the software side of certain problems for such users is....

Supercomputers: Not Always the Best for Big Data

Jun 18, 2013 | The world's largest supercomputers, like Tianhe-2, are great at traditional, compute-intensive HPC workloads, such as simulating atomic decay or modeling tornados. But data-intensive applications--such as mining big data sets for connections--is a different sort of workload, and runs best on a different sort of computer.
