Supermicro TwinBlade Wins 2010 Best Blade Award

TwinBlade delivers highest performance, density (20 DP nodes in 7U) and power supply efficiency (94 percent) with lowest TCO and 40Gb/s InfiniBand

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 10 -- Super Micro Computer, Inc., the leader in server technology innovation and green computing, today announced that its widely-available TwinBlade won the Best Blade-Based Solution award at the 4th annual BladeSystems Insight Summit 2010 on April 20 in Orlando, Fla. The IT executives and industry analysts in attendance voted for the TwinBlade platform as the best overall blade server in the industry. This 2010 award is the second annual blade award won by Supermicro in three years at the BladeSystems Insight Summit.

"This prestigious award recognizes Supermicro's engineering innovation that doubles the number of nodes in a single blade enclosure," said Charles Liang, CEO and president of Supermicro. "Easy to deploy, easy to use, and offering the best price-to-performance and profit potential available to our customers, SuperBlade was also ranked number one by CRN in its cover story entitled Blades of Glory, which was a head-to-head competition among the major brands. It also won the Best Green Data Center Solution award at the 2nd annual BladeSystems Insight."

As the newest addition to Supermicro's SuperBlade family, the innovative TwinBlade doubles the number of dual-processor (DP) compute nodes per 7U enclosure to 20, for an incredibly dense and cost-effective 0.35U per node. Based on the SBI-7226T-T2 blade supporting the latest Intel Xeon 5600 Series (Westmere) processors this system delivers unprecedented performance-per-dollar and performance-per-square-foot. Available with dual 40Gb/s QDR InfiniBand switches, this optimized blade solution combines industry-leading 94 percent power supply efficiency with Supermicro's innovative and highly efficient thermal and cooling system designs to deliver exceptional system performance-per-watt, making it the greenest, most power-efficient server solution in the world today.

The TwinBlade enables up to 2,880 processing cores per 42U rack when powered by new twelve-core AMD Opteron 6100 Series processors (Socket G34). Featuring dual 40Gb/s InfiniBand, FCoE or 10GbE switches and dual 1/10GbE switches in one 7U enclosure, TwinBlade provides the highest performing I/O throughput and scalability in the industry and is a superb solution for high-performance computing (HPC), datacenter, enterprise and cloud computing deployments. With successful installations at CERN, PRACE, and other Fortune 100 organizations, the SuperBlade has already become the preferred solution for a wide range of mission-critical applications.

Supermicro's OfficeBlade enclosure with 10 blades in 7U provides industry-leading energy efficiency and low-noise (50dB*) operation, making it an excellent choice for office environments or a personal supercomputer, especially when mounted into Supermicro's optimized 14U mobile rack cabinet (CSE-RACK14U). While the quiet OfficeBlade is ideal for office environments, the DatacenterBlade packs 14 energy-efficient blades into one 7U enclosure, with industry-leading performance-per-watt, making it perfect for datacenter and HPC applications. Supermicro's enterprise-class SuperBlade features both dual and quad-processor blades for performance, scalability and flexibility. For optimum storage, SuperBlade supports up to 10 two-socket server blades with 60 hot-plug SAS2/SATA hard disk drives in a single 7U enclosure.
