Summit plans Midwest pilot project to expand access to high performance computing
WASHINGTON, Aug. 31 -- The Council on Competitiveness convened a Summit & Workshop today to discuss the creation of a pilot project that would leverage high performance computing (HPC) to increase the innovation and productivity of the U.S. manufacturing sector. The "SME/OEM Midwest Pilot for Modeling and Simulation Summit & Workshop," hosted at University of Chicago Booth School of Business, was attended by leaders from the public and private sector focused on expanding use of HPC to make small and mid-sized manufacturing companies become more competitive in the global marketplace.
"Helping small and medium-sized manufacturers access HPC modeling and simulation is a critical step in revitalizing the industry and retaining and creating jobs in the U.S.," said Dr. Cynthia McIntyre, senior vice president of the Council on Competitiveness, who is leading the national focus on expanding HPC. "Our goal is to create a pilot project that demonstrates the power of this technology to become an engine of economic growth."
The Summit & Workshop was attended by a high-level group of government officials including Congressman Daniel Lipinski (D-IL), a member of the Committee on Science & Technology and Chairman of the Research & Science Education subcommittee. Rep. Lipinski delivered the lunchtime keynote at the event in support of the pilot project and its goals.
Participants also took part in a series of roundtables and open discussions that addressed various barriers to expanding HPC access to small and medium-sized manufacturers. Challenges such as acquiring software that fully leverages the latest hardware technologies and training workers to use that technology often prevent manufacturers from utilizing HPC. The event concluded with all participants brainstorming the next steps toward launching a Midwest pilot program.
The Council on Competitiveness has worked consistently to help more manufacturers gain access to modeling and simulation technology. Earlier this year the Council convened a meeting at The George Washington University and recommended a National Software Alliance. The Alliance would leverage a public-private partnership to provide resources and expertise to achieve wider utilization of HPC.
The discussions at today's Summit & Workshop will be used to inform the proposed Midwest pilot project and draw national attention to the need for a national HPC strategy.
