Dec. 16 -- The LSU Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) named Honggao Liu, Ph.D., as the center's new deputy director effective December 13. Liu is moving to CCT from his position as director of High Performance Computing (HPC) at LSU.
"I am excited by the prospect of Honggao bringing his technical and leadership skills to CCT. We will work closely together to continue developing the center into an exciting environment that is recognized internationally for research & innovation," said Joel E. Tohline, the director of CCT and professor of LSU's Department of Physics & Astronomy. "The center and the University community at large will benefit from his focus on computational science and high performance computing."
"I am tremendously excited to have the opportunity to be the deputy director of CCT," Liu said. " I look forward to working with CCT faculty and staff to reach the center's goals and advance the University's Flagship Agenda by using advanced cyberinfrastructure-based tools and developing computational science applications to enable research and education."
Liu will continue as HPC director until the University names the next director of HPC. Liu, who has been at LSU for more than 13 years, has worked for the past eight years in HPC. HPC operates as a partnership between the LSU Center for Computation & Technology and LSU Information Technology Services (ITS) and currently resides within CCT. The HPC department enables campus researchers to access the University's supercomputing resources and discover new ways to apply this technology to their areas of study.
Liu has been instrumental in establishing HPC at LSU as a nationally recognized facility for providing production HPC cycles to researchers on campus, the state, throughout the nation, and across the world. In addition, Liu plays a leadership role in the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative's (LONI) development efforts. LONI is a state-of-the art, fiber optics network that runs throughout Louisiana, and connects Louisiana and Mississippi research universities to one another as well as the National LambdaRail and Internet 2. Liu was one of the leaders on the team that integrated LONI onto the TeraGrid, the national cyberinfrastructure backbone, in early 2008 and is currently the principal investigator on LONI's TeraGrid project and the TeraGrid site lead for LONI.
Prior to his appointment at LSU, Liu received his doctorate in chemical engineering from LSU, two master's degrees in chemical engineering from Tianjin University and LSU, and his bachelor's in chemical engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University.
