ETI spearheads next-generation computing runtime system; selected by Intel team for DARPA program
NEWARK, Del., March 21 -- E.T. International, Inc. (ETI), a provider of system software solutions for hybrid and many-core hardware architectures, today announced that Intel selected ETI as system software partner to spearhead the development of high-performance parallel runtime systems for future many-core computer architectures as part of a Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) effort.
Part of DARPA's recent Ubiquitous High Performance Computing (UHPC) program, this collaboration is a piece of the public-private research initiative to build an energy-efficient extreme-scale computer system. The DARPA UHPC program seeks to develop these extreme-scale computing systems by 2018. Intel's UHPC team, jointly funded by Intel and DARPA, includes ETI Vice President of R&D Dr. Rishi Khan among its principal investigators.
Extreme-scale computing presents enormous power consumption challenges not previously encountered with today's conventional cluster computing. Compounding these hardware challenges, an execution model must be designed to exploit the underlying performance of the hardware platform and run applications in an ultra parallel and efficient fashion. The coupling of these challenges requires a hardware and software co-design ecosystem that will take full advantage of supercomputing power and capacity.
"Intel's selection of ETI software validates our execution model and positions our software framework as one of the most capable models to meet tomorrow's extreme-scale computing challenges," said Dr. Khan. "ETI's proven track record in implementing software running on tens of thousands of cores has been the foundation for our vision of a heterogeneous, many-core programming method that will drive the next generation of petaflop and exaflop computing. We look forward to partnering with Intel to co-develop and co-design this highly scalable system."
In addition to ETI, other partners on the Intel team include Reservoir Labs; University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign; University of California, San Diego; and University of Delaware, lead by principal investigator and ETI founder Dr. Guang Gao.

NVIDIA is telling everyone that the GK110, its new Kepler GPU aimed at supercomputing, is all about improving performance per watt. But the other driving theme behind the new architecture is reducing the GPU's reliance on its CPU host. How well it accomplishes both these goals areas could determine the success of the new chip in high performance computing.

PGI, Cray, and CAPS enterprise are moving quickly to get their new OpenACC-supported compilers into the hands of GPGPU developers. At NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference this week, there was plenty of discussion around the new HPC accelerator framework, and all three OpenACC compiler makers, as well as NVIDIA, were talking up the technology.
