It’s one thing to know the history of supercomputing; it’s another thing entirely to see it visualized as a series of milestones.
Peer1 Hosting recently created a detailed infographic that traces the roots of supercomputing and the evolution of HPC over the years, beginning with the first definitions of computing in the first part of the 20th century, to the core technologies that spawned modern supercomputers, including innovations in analog, relay, and vaccuum tube-based technology. Eventually, “computers became ‘super’ as multiple processors were linked together and multiple processes could be performed on the same sets of data.”
The graphic goes beyond the last Top500 years, taking us into the next 20 years—a time during which supercomputers “are expected to develop self-awareness.”
