SGI to Deliver 2.3 PetaFlop System to Total S.A.
Fremont, Feb.14 -- SGI, provider of technical computing, today announced that Total S.A. has selected SGI to provide a high performance computing (HPC) solution capable of delivering compute power of 2.3 petaflops per second. The new system will consist of the latest generation of SGI ICE X servers, and increases the current data processing power previously available to Total at their Jean Féger Scientific and Technical Centre (CSTJF) in Pau, southwest France.
“The needs for compute-intensive data processing in the oil and gas industry are constantly increasing,” said SGI interim CEO Ron Verdoorn. “With data files exceeding ten petabytes, technological innovation for reservoir modeling and simulation relies not only on compute architectures but also on storage architectures, as well. Within this framework, SGI offers a complete integrated solution including compute, storage, and services.”
Representing strata in all their complexity and visualizing principal accumulations is mobilizing Total geo-science expertise, in terms of geophysicists, geologists and reservoir engineers. This new system will help Total in the quest in identifying and developing oil and gas prospects.

OpenACC Starts to Gather Developer Mindshare
PGI, Cray, and CAPS enterprise are moving quickly to get their new OpenACC-supported compilers into the hands of GPGPU developers. At NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference this week, there was plenty of discussion around the new HPC accelerator framework, and all three OpenACC compiler makers, as well as NVIDIA, were talking up the technology.

NVIDIA Launches Kepler Into HPC
NVIDIA has introduced its first Kepler-generation GPU product for high performance computing, and revealed some of the inner working of the new architecture. The announcement took place at the kickoff of the company's GPU Technology Conference taking place this week in San Jose, California.
