BERKELEY, Calif., and BEIJING, China, Feb. 17 — The International Center for Computational Sciences (ICCS) in Berkeley and the National Astronomical Observatory/Chinese Academy of Sciences have issued a call for research posters and contributed talks to be presented at the Third International Manycore and Accelerator-Based High-performance Scientific Computing Workshop to be held March 26-30 in Beijing.
Abstracts for posters and contributed talks must be submitted by Saturday, Feb. 25. Submissions should be made using the workshop registration site. The workshop aims to bridge the gap between cutting-edge new computing technologies and scientific application programmers and users. It also seeks to inspire and encourage faculty, staff and students to learn about tools and methods on how to use such new facilities (such as multi- or many-core architectures, including GPUs or FPGAs).
The workshop is a joint venture between ICCS/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Heidelberg, Germany. The National Astronomical Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) is a member of a special network operating GPU-accelerated supercomputers for basic and applied sciences in China. The NOAC’s Silk Road Project aims to foster education and international collaboration in China, focused on computational astrophysics and physics.
Since the workshop will be held at the NAOC, computational astrophysics and astrophysical data processing will be important topics, but organizers plan a strong interdisciplinary program.
The workshop will open with two days of tutorials on March 26 – 27, followed by the three-day workshop program March 28 – 30. The workshop is being held in cooperation with the HPC Advisory Council, an international organization for high-performance computing research, outreach and education.

NVIDIA is telling everyone that the GK110, its new Kepler GPU aimed at supercomputing, is all about improving performance per watt. But the other driving theme behind the new architecture is reducing the GPU's reliance on its CPU host. How well it accomplishes both these goals areas could determine the success of the new chip in high performance computing.

PGI, Cray, and CAPS enterprise are moving quickly to get their new OpenACC-supported compilers into the hands of GPGPU developers. At NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference this week, there was plenty of discussion around the new HPC accelerator framework, and all three OpenACC compiler makers, as well as NVIDIA, were talking up the technology.
