NASA KEPLER Project Manager to Keynote at HPC User Forum

Feb. 21 -- Dr. Roger Hunter, manager of NASA's KEPLER Project, will give the keynote talk at the April 16-18, 2012 HPC User Forum meeting in Richmond, Virginia, IDC announced today.

KEPLER is NASA’s first mission capable of finding earth-size worlds around other stars.  Launched in March, 2009, KEPLER’s objective is to determine if other Earths exist in our galaxy and how many are there.  The results of KEPLER will be profound – either Earth is a very rare planet, or earth-like planets are commonplace.  Dr. Hunter leads a team of over 80 scientists and engineers on a mission that is expected to last at least 3 ½ years in search of another earth.  KEPLER has already confirmed the existence of 61 exoplanets, that is, earth-sized planets in stars’ habitable zones.

The Richmond meeting will also feature other timely sessions:

  • Developments in data-intensive computing ("Big Data")
  • Advances in parallel programming and performance modeling
  • A distinguished panel on the role and prospects for government funding
  • A panel on disruptive HPC technologies
  • A major session on industrial access to high-end HPC resources
  • Talks on processor technologies, storage and networking
  • IDC's update on the worldwide HPC market
  • Vendor technical updates

The meeting will take place at the historical Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.  To see the detailed agenda and register, go to www.hpcuserforum.com.  Questions? Contact Steve Conway, sconway@idc.com or Earl Joseph (ejoseph@idc.com).

NVIDIA Works On CPU Co-Dependency Issues with Kepler GPU

NVIDIA is telling everyone that the GK110, its new Kepler GPU aimed at supercomputing, is all about improving performance per watt. But the other driving theme behind the new architecture is reducing the GPU's reliance on its CPU host. How well it accomplishes both these goals areas could determine the success of the new chip in high performance computing.
