Eurotech to Supply HPC System for Dynamical Exascale Entry Platform Project


AMARO, Italy, April 5 -- Eurotech, a leading company in embedded and supercomputing technologies, announces that it has received a 1.2 million euro order from Forschungszentrum Jülich, one of the largest research centres in Europe, for supply of a HPC (High Performance Computing) system of the Aurora family. Delivery is scheduled to take place within this year.

The Aurora HPC will be used within the scope of the EU-funded project DEEP (Dynamical Exascale Entry Platform), an innovative European response to the challenge of creating supercomputers capable of performing ExaFlops, i.e. a billion billion calculations per second, that is a thousand times faster than today’s fastest supercomputers.

The DEEP consortium, led by Forschungszentrum Jülich, proposes to develop a novel, Exascale-enabling supercomputing architecture that takes the concept of compute acceleration to a new level: instead of adding accelerator cards to Cluster nodes, an accelerator Cluster, called Booster, will complement a conventional HPC system and increase its compute performance. While the Cluster is an off-the-shelf component, the Booster will be designed and built by the DEEP project partners using cutting edge technology. Together with a software stack focused on meeting Exascale requirements, comprising adapted programming models, libraries and performance tools, the DEEP architecture will enable unprecedented scalability. In the DEEP consortium Eurotech will be the responsible to assemble and design the cabinets, racks and blades of the system. 

The supercomputer model that Eurotech will deliver to Jülich is the new HPC 10-10, the latest addition to the Aurora product family.

Built on the grounds of several years of experience in HPC, the Aurora HPC 10-10 supports the Sandy Bridge Intel® Xeon® 2600 series up to the powerful E5-2687W at 3.1 Ghz and 150W. This is the type of processor that Eurotech will implement for the Jülich delivery together with 32 Gb per node of memory and the 3D Torus driven by Extoll software.

Thanks to direct board hot liquid cooling the heat extraction efficiency is maximized, allowing a rack of the Aurora HPC 10-10 to enclose 512 150 W Intel CPUs, generating 100 Tflops of CPU computational power in just 1.5 m2 (16 sqft), which makes the Aurora supercomputer an extremely dense machine that contributes to consistent space savings.

The HPC 10-10 for Jülich is projected to have peak efficiencies of around 950 Mflops/W of pure CPU, a 97% efficiency in power conversion and hot water cooling: all factors that work well to lower the data center PUE and build green systems.
