Gauss Center for Supercomputing to Participate in ISC'12


BERLIN, Germany, June 1 -- The Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) is announcing its participation in the International Supercomputing Conference 2012 (ISC’12) to be held at CCH Hamburg from June 17 to 21. GCS will present itself on exhibition booth no. 150 and will host four HPC-related sessions in the conference leg of the event. Additionally, the noted GCS Award will be handed over by Prof. Michael M. Resch (HLRS), member of the GCS board, during the ISC Opening Session, and Prof. Arndt Bode (LRZ) will deliver the Thursday keynote address entitled “Extreme Energy Efficiency with SuperMUC”.

The four GCS sessions, hosted by representatives of the three GCS supercomputer centers HLRS (High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart), JSC (Juelich Super-computing Centre) and LRZ (Leibniz Rechenzentrum Garching) will take place in Hall 8. The scientists will address various subjects related to supercomputing in the fields of science and industry, underscoring Germany’s efforts to maintain a leading role in the supply and use of HPC systems and services in Europe and beyond:

(1) Monday, June 18, 13:00-15:00hrs: Panel Session “HPC Strategies in Germany”

The session will provide insight into the German HPC strategies with a special focus on the path towards Exascale. Speakers: Prof. Arndt Bode (LRZ), Prof. Thomas Lippert (JSC), and Prof. Michael M. Resch (HLRS);

(2) Tuesday, June 19, 14:15-15:15hrs: Supercomputing Projects at LRZ

Selected users of the High Performance Computer in Bavaria (HLRB II) will report on their results with a special focus on both the scientific questions and the specific aspects of high performance computing encountered. Host: Dr. Helmut Satzger (LRZ)

(3) Tuesday, June 19, 16:00-17:00hrs: Simulation Laboratories at JSC: Community-Oriented Software Support and Development for HPC

JSC will introduce the structure and status of its ‘Simulation Laboratories’, highlighting recent research and recently concluded advanced support initiatives. Speaker: Dr. Paul Gibbon (Institute for Advanced Simulation, JSC)

(4) Wednesday, June 20, 11:30-13:00hrs: Scalability Matters for Industrial Applications?!

The session will provide an overview of how public research and industry can partake in the usage of high-end HPC systems. Selected showcases will give an insight into how large scale HPC systems deliver benefit to industrial oriented simulations and how collaborative research supports this development. Speaker: Dr. Stefan Wesner (HLRS).

Thursday Keynote by Prof. Arndt Bode: Extreme Energy Efficiency with SuperMUC

In his Keynote, Prof. Dr. Arndt Bode (LRZ) will introduce SuperMUC, the latest high performance general purpose computer installed at the Leibniz Supercomputer Center of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (LRZ-BAdW) in Munich. SuperMUC, which has special emphasis on extreme energy efficiency, is the contribution of GCS to the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) and will be used by European and German scientists.

GCS Booth # 150, Exhibition Hall

On the GCS booth no. 150 in the exhibition hall, visitors will be able to meet and inter-exchange with researchers, scientists and experts of the three GCS supercomputing centers HLRS, JSC and LRZ. Presentations on the booth will include the following:

HLRS will showcase interactive 3D visualizations of simulation results on a two by two 3D display wall. Applications are ranging from weather and combustion simulations to interactive simulations of water power plants. Highlight will be the visualization of a pumped hydro power station showing large scale terrain rendering combined with visualization of the power house and the actual water turbine/pump and the visualization of water flow through the draft tube of that turbine.

JSC will present LLview, the in-house developed comprehensive interactive monitoring software for supercomputers, demonstrating live the operation of various supercomputers worldwide. A wide spectrum of scientific results obtained with its supercomputers JUGENE and JUROPA will be exhibited in 2D presentation videos and animations.

LRZ will demonstrate simulations on its current HPC systems and provide details about its newly installed, highly energy-efficient 3 Petaflop/s system SuperMUC.

GCS Award

During ISC’s Opening Session on Monday morning, the well known GCS Award will be presented. It recognizes the most outstanding paper in the field of scalable supercomputing chosen earlier by a Gauss Award Committee from all papers accepted for the ISC’12 Research Paper Sessions. The award winners will receive a cash prize courtesy of GCS, which will be handed over by Prof. Michael M. Resch, member of the board of Gauss Supercomputing Centre.
