Sept. 18 — The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) has named Dr. Kevin D. Franklin to join its advisory board. Franklin is a veteran of the computational humanities, arts and social science (HASS) research community. He is the executive director of the Institute for Computing in Humanities, Arts and Social Science (I-CHASS), a senior research scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), a research professor in Educational Policy, Organization and Leadership, and adjunct associate professor in African American Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Franklin’s work seeks to understand and promote the blending of humanities, arts, social science and advanced computing research and education. He has directed a number of cutting-edge projects in HASS Cyberinfrastructure and has worked to build and support interdisciplinary research teams that address issues across these disciplines. Franklin is a co-founder of the Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology Advanced Collaboratory (HASTAC) and the Advanced Research and Technology Collaboratory for the Americas (ARTCA). He also has served as a Deputy Director at the University of California San Diego Supercomputer Center and Executive Director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute. HPCwire named Franklin as one of the Top 12 People to Watch in high-performance computing in 2010.

The Institute for Computing in Humanities, Arts and Social Science (I-CHASS) charts new ground in high-performance computing and the human sciences. Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources.
