SAN DIEGO, Calif., Oct. 9 — Tabor Communications Inc., (TCI) a leading international media, advertising, and communications company and publisher of a complete advanced computing portfolio that includes HPCwire, HPC in the Cloud, Digital Manufacturing Report, and Datanami announced today that CEO and founder Tom Tabor has been appointed to the Organization of American States, Advanced Research and Technology Collaboratory for the Americas (OAS-ARTCA) Steering Committee. The appointment is to take effect immediately.
OAS-ARTCA is a collaboration of high-end research, industry, government and nonprofit organizations across the Americas, that links research and technology activities in North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean (collectively, the Americas) to address pressing problems that arise in the natural sciences, medicine, technology, and the human sciences. The organization encourages researchers, educators, and nonprofit leaders to work together on projects to improve the quality of life for citizens of the Western Hemisphere. The technical and administrative resources provided by the Office of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Organization of American States (OAS) support ARTCA’s efforts.
“Its truly an honor to serve on the steering committee of such a highly esteemed project as OAS-ARTCA”, said Tom Tabor, CEO and founder of Tabor Communications Inc. “Our history with the project actually dates back to 2005, when Tabor Communications hosted the first GRIDtoday VIP Summit on Grid Computing in Latin America. It was that ‘meeting of the minds’ by the regional leaders during the summit which inspired OAS-ARTCA’s inception. Since those early days, we have worked together in collaboration and witnessed the profound transitions taking place across the region as a result of the project’s influence. Together, we will continue to work towards achieving our vision to strengthen Inter-American collaboration, and to encourage the establishment of a scientific culture in the region. I’m extremely humbled and proud to be serving with such a dedicated and capable team.”
"We are very pleased to have Mr. Tom Tabor officially join us as a member of the OAS-ARTCA Steering Committee, which has enlisted a world-class leadership comprised of renown academics, legislators, and active civilians from various fields”, said Dr. Kevin Franklin, ARTCA co-founder and the Executive Director, Institute for Computing in Humanities, Arts and Social Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. “Tom’s highly respected reputation as a pioneer in the electronic publishing industry, combined with his innate ability to motivate, lead, and inspire diverse groups of people, was a major consideration in his selection for this role. It is my belief that his active involvement will have a powerful and positive influence on our ability to accomplish ARTCA’s goals in the years ahead.”
About OAS-ARTCA
Established in 2008, OAS-ARTCA’s objective is to promote interdisciplinary, inter-university, and international cooperation through enhanced research and development supported by advanced computing to develop human resources and technologies that will address complex societal issues throughout the hemisphere. OAS-ARTCA is currently led by an Advisory Board and a Steering Committee, which supports the Executive Management team in setting the overall direction and strategy of the project in collaboration with the technical and administrative resources of the Office of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Organization of American States. Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The study of climate change is one of those scientific problems where it is almost essential to model the entire Earth to attain accurate results and make worthwhile predictions. In an attempt to make climate science more accessible to smaller research facilities, NASA introduced what they call ‘Climate in a Box,’ a system they note acts as a desktop supercomputer.
