EDMONTON, Alberta, Nov. 5 – Obsidian is pleased to report that the Chinese Patent Office has granted its application for Extended Reach InfiniBand, adding a new and significant jurisdiction to the company's existing coverage domains - US, UK, Australia, Mexico, Russia, Japan and Canada.
InfiniBand is an open-standard high performance interconnect technology developed for use in large-scale scientific computation, but is also increasingly deployed in demanding environments such as Cloud and Enterprise data centers.
InfiniBand is noted for its cost-efficiency, high bandwidth and low latency characteristics, however it is intrinsically limited to very short connections within data centers. Obsidian's patented extended reach InfiniBand technology – as embodied in commercial-off-the-shelf LongbowTM devices – completely removes this distance limitation, enabling the same performance advantages seen in LAN (Local Area Network) applications leveraged across global distances.
“Since geographically extended InfiniBand networks are still lossless, they are able to migrate data across the globe without the performance degradation normally associated with distance,” said Dr. David Southwell, Obsidian's CVO. “As society produces and consumes ever more data and continues to transition to cloud models (remote IT infrastructure), Obsidian's range-extended InfiniBand capability becomes increasingly strategic, especially when combined with Obsidian's routing and encryption technologies.”
