HPC Lands in Salt Lake City for SC12


SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 6 – The leading lights in high performance computing from around the world will descend on Salt Lake City Nov. 10 and for the six days of SC12 transform the Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center into a global supercomputing hub.

SC12 is the premier international conference for high-performance computing (HPC), networking, storage and analysis. The conference is expecting 10,000 attendees representing more than 50 countries and 366 exhibitors. Exhibits and technical presentations at SC12 will offer a look at the state-of-the art in High Performance Computing (HPC) and a glimpse of the future. SC12 highlights include:

  • World-renowned physicist, futurist and author Michio Kaku will deliver the keynote address Tuesday, Nov. 13 focused on themes from his latest book, “Physics of the Future: How Science Will Change Daily Life by 2100.” Press contact: Lauren Rotman, lauren@es.net, (202) 251-2997.
  • Other invited plenary speakers include: Henry Markam of the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology, renowned as founder of the Brain Mind Institute and the Blue Brain and Human Brain projects (http://bluebrain.epfl.ch/), will discuss “Simulating the Human Brain: An Extreme Challenge for Computing” at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15; and Tsuyoshi Yasuki will discuss “Achieving Design Targets by Stochastic Car Crash Simulations” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14.   • Internationally respected HPC industry analysts Earl Joseph and Addison Snell will brief the press on the state of the industry, discuss its impact on our world, and highlight some of the next generation technologies being showcased this year on the SC12 show floor.   • Release of the latest Top500 list of the world’s fastest supercomputers, a closely watched indicator of global competition in computing technology and the economic strength it enables. In the view of the U.S. Council on Competitiveness: “to out compute is to out compete.” A special history display will mark the 20th anniversary of the Top500 in booth 1925.   • Teams of students from around the world will compete in the 47-hour Student Cluster Challenge, working around the clock to build and run applications on a supercomputer of their own design requiring no more energy than a coffee maker. This competition, the Le Mans endurance race of supercomputing, will take place in the convention center lobby from Monday to Wednesday, Nov. 12-14.   • Teams of students from Skyline High School in Salt Lake City and the University of Utah will compete in a new pilot contest at SC12 using a LittleFe computing platform.   • SC12 will be powered by the world’s fastest network – SCinet. Built for the SC conference each year by more than 100 volunteers using $28 million in loaned equipment, SCinet will deliver nearly 800 Gigabits per second (Gbps) in bandwidth, which would allow the entire electronic content of the Library of Congress to be transferred in about 2 minutes.

SCinet, which will install nearly 80 miles of fiber optic cable in and around the convention center and is built in collaboration with the Utah Education Network, provides the platform that SC exhibitors and attendees require to showcase the revolutionary high performance computing (HPC) applications and networking experiments that are the hallmark of SC. CERN, Google Drive Future of Global Science Initiatives
