Nov. 14 – At SC12, Eurotech is introducing their new addition to the Aurora line of Supercomputers, the Aurora Tigon. The name of the new HPC was inspired by the Tigon, a cross breed between a lion and a tiger. Like its animal counterpart, the Aurora Tigon is hybrid, powerful and agile in adapting to customer requirements.
Built on the same design concept of the Aurora HPC 10-10, the Tigon maintains the same flexible and modular approach adding the consistent performance and energy efficiency that come from the usage of top line CPUs in combination with accelerators.
Each Tigon node hosts 2 Intel Xeon E5 series CPUs and 2 accelerators that can be either 2 Nvidia Kepler GPUs or 2 Intel Phi coprocessors, giving a peak performance of 2.74 TFlop/s. The accelerators are connected to the mother board through a Eurotech designed cable that set up a PCIe2 (moving to PCIe3) connection. They are mounted on the rear site of the "cold plate" allowing for very effective cooling to be implemented. An Aurora Tigon rack has 128 of such nodes, bringing one rack performance to 350 TFlop/s. This is a remarkable number if we think it is achieved per single rack occupying just 1.5 m2.
This density is possible thanks to the Aurora Direct Hot Water Cooling system, which has been adopted throughout the Eurotech generation of supercomputers and proven in a good number of installations. Eurotech approach to cooling is quite pervasive, so also in the Tigon all components are directly liquid cooled including the accelerators.
The use of liquid cooling and accelerators contributes to make the Tigon one of the most energy efficient HPC solutions in the world. Also, some new design ideas have worked in the direction of efficiency and density like taking on the mother board the 48 DC / 12 DC power conversion: this helped to refine the already quite good power conversion efficiency of the previous Eurotech supercomputer generation.
Energy efficiency and Green IT have always been paramount for us," says Giovanbattista Mattiussi, Eurotech HPC marketing manager. "Nowadays, we can say Eurotech can provide determinant help to our customers in cutting energy costs and improving their HPC investment TCO."
"Another stringent need that is surfacing in HPC," Mattiussi adds, "is the one of reliability/resilience. I can say Eurotech is a quality driven hardware manufacturer and we include in our design monitoring systems and redundancy to guarantee maximum reliability."
On the network side, the Tigon nodes are connected through QDR/FDR InfiniBand links, while there is also the support of an optional 3D Torus network based on FPGAs, another good peculiarity of the Eurotech systems.
With the Tigon, Eurotech keeps their commitment to evolve the Aurora product line into the future. To take a glimpse of the Tigon and to know more about what Eurotech plans or the future, visit them at their booth at the SC12.
