As an example of the success of this valued partnership, Carahsoft and Ciena recently worked together to upgrade the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) and the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNWGP)’s Pacific Wave international network peering facility leveraging Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, equipped with WaveLogic Coherent Optical Processors. This deployment will provide 100G networking capabilities to Pacific Wave's extensive research and education (R&E) network infrastructure across the western coast of the United States, from Los Angeles to Seattle.
“Through this partnership, federal agencies will have a streamlined contract process and be better positioned to tackle some of their toughest networking challenges by leveraging Ciena’s industry-leading packet and optical networking solutions,” said David Peed, vice president and general manager, Ciena Government Solutions, Inc. “Carahsoft’s dedicated team and proven ability to provide strong sales and marketing support within the public sector are second to none, and we look forward to leveraging their expertise to increase demand and awareness for our government solutions.”

Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
