DEISA PRACE Symposium 2010 in Barcelona Announced

March 5 -- DEISA, the Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications, and PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, have organised a second major European event in high performance computing: the DEISA PRACE Symposium 2010. This symposium will take place from May 10-12, in Barcelona, Spain. It will be hosted by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) at the famous Casa Milà, also known as "La Pedrera" (a modernist building designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí).

The theme of this unique symposium is "Advancements in Petaflop Computing". The symposium covers both European and international developments. The event is of major interest to a broad audience: computational scientists, HPC technology experts, government representatives, vendors, and industry partners.

Keynote speakers across the world will outline the strategic perspectives of high performance computing (HPC). During the first day they include Montserrat Torné (Director General for International Cooperation and Institutional Relations of the Spanish Ministry), Konstantinos Glinos (European Commission); José Muñoz (National Science Foundation, US), Akira Ukawa (University of Tsukuba, Japan) and Thomas Zacharia (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, US).

The second day focuses on challenges in computational science. Featured speakers include: Laurent Villard (EPFL, Switzerland), Wolfgang Hillebrandt, (MPI for Astrophysics, Germany) Ivo Gut (National Genome Institute,Spain) and Thomas Schulthess, (ETHZ & CSCS, Switzerland).

Speakers from PRACE will address future technologies including novel programming paradigms, tools, Tier-0 systems access, and emerging technologies.

DEISA and PRACE will provide updates on Extreme Computing in Europe, HPC architectures, applications, and training. In three Extreme Computing sessions, challenging computational science projects from all over Europe will be presented, covering essential scientific areas.
