BEIJING, Aug. 13 — China has shut down supercomputer Tianhe-1A due to a deadly explosion that took place in the port city of Tianjin on Wednesday night. Tianhe-1A is housed at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, about 75 miles southeast of Beijing. The building sustained broken windows and collapsed ceilings when a violent explosion erupted from a nearby warehouse, a storage facility for dangerous chemicals.
The blast killed at least 17 people and injured more than 400 as of Thursday morning, according to officials.
The supercomputer and its database remain intact, said Liu Guangming, director of the center, adding that it was still running smoothly immediately after the blast. The system is located in a reinforced computer room, but for safety and security reasons, Liu and his staff made the decision to manually shut down Tianhe-1 half an hour after the blast.
