CHANTILLY, Va., Sept. 4 — Engility Holdings, Inc., today announced it has been awarded a prime position on a $25 million multiple award contract by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide broad spectrum IT support to include high performance computing (HPC) initiatives for the agency’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL).
The laboratory’s mission is to advance scientific understanding of climate and its natural and human-related variations and impacts. It also improves NOAA’s predictive capabilities through the development and use of world-leading computer models of the atmosphere, oceans, and global climate. Work performed by the Engility team encompasses NOAA’s Research & Development HPC System (RDHPCS), GFDL’s local IT infrastructure and 24/7 computer operations center, and support for software and workflow development and optimization to ensure the GFDL’s climate models perform well on a variety of HPC assets.
The team also collaborates with GFDL scientists to refine their model code to create applications and tools that improve the lab’s ability to understand, predict, analyze, and visualize climate behavior on seasonal, annual, decadal, and centennial time scales. This joint strategy relies heavily upon specialized “big data” strategies and techniques.
“NOAA is on the leading edge of HPC hardware and software utilization, and we are looking forward to continuing our work to support this mission through our role as a trusted partner to the GFDL,” said Tony Smeraglinolo, President and CEO of Engility. “We have proudly supported NOAA GFDL since 2008, and we look forward to continuing this long-term relationship with our highly specialized and skilled team at the laboratory.”
Engility is one of three companies awarded a position on this 4.5-year award, a blanket purchase agreement (BPA).
