MRV Delivers New OptiDriver Solution

February 18, 2014

CHATSWORTH, Calif., Feb. 18 — MRV Communications, Inc., a leading provider of innovative packet and optical solutions, today announced the addition of a 100Gbps multi-protocol, multi-rate muxponder to its recently introduced OptiDriver optical transport platform. MRV is helping data center operators, content delivery networks and cloud service providers maximize investment in their 10G and 40G infrastructure by providing a flexible, intelligent path to a 100G optical transport network. The purpose-built OptiDriver 100G muxponder enables operators to achieve extreme bandwidth efficiency as they support revenue-generating applications like public, private or hybrid cloud, web hosting services, high-performance computing and more.

“Most people know data center and content delivery network operators are experiencing a rapid growth in streaming video, cloud storage and virtualization data traffic, but many of these operators have limited fiber resources that they need to maximize. To accomplish this they need to introduce 100G solutions into their network. With the large amount of 10G and 40G ports in their network today, a flexible 100G muxponder makes for an ideal solution,” said Andrew Schmitt, principal analyst at Infonetics Research.

MRV’s new OptiDriver optical transport platform is the industry’s most compact, flexible and power-efficient portfolio of interconnect solutions. The OptiDriver muxponder offers remarkable flexibility with fully pluggable interfaces. These interfaces can host two 40G QSPF+, ten 10G SFP+ and a 100G CFP uplink that cost-effectively supports pluggable short range, DWDM metro and long range coherent 100G optics. For customers with a large number of 10G services in their network, the muxponder is an efficient way to combine ten 10G services into a single 100G signal. For customers with a mix of 40G and 10G services, the muxponder can carry any mix of services without the need to pre-plan the network or replace hardware for different mixes.

The OptiDriver 100G muxponder enables outstanding flexibility in service consolidation and ensures optimization for current and future high-speed technologies. Data centers, for example, can future-proof their investments and utilize network resources more effectively as they quickly expand bandwidth capacity and improve network manageability. MRV’s Pro-Vision service provisioning and management solution provides streamlined manageability for the entire OptiDriver platform with centralized service visibility, intelligence and control. Pro-Vision enables operators to reduce OPEX and proactively prevent potential errors that can occur from manual provisioning.

“MRV continues to invest in the development of leading, forward-thinking solutions for next-generation packet and optical networks. As a result, our customers are able to build networks that are simpler to manage and have the capacity to support advanced, in-demand services,” said John Golub, vice president of global product line management for MRV Communications. “The OptiDriver 100G muxponder reflects the traditional flexibility of MRV’s packet and optical solutions and allows customers to use a single set of hardware across multiple applications. This capability reduces ordering complexity and results in an overall reduction in capital and operational expenses.”

For additional support of the latest advanced optical technologies, the OptiDriver platform also now supports flexible reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs). This allows network operators to dynamically move individual groups of wavelengths around the network through software rather than hardware changes. The OptiDriver chassis will initially support a four degree ROADM for applications including simple ring/add-drop networks and more complicated optical mesh networks.
