RSC Becomes Leading Russian Supercomputer Vendor in Local Top50 List

MOSCOW, Russia, April 9 — RSC Group, the leading developer and system integrator of innovative solutions for HPC and Data Centers, has increased its share by 80% in the latest edition of the Top50 list of the most powerful supercomputers in Russia and CIS (published on March 31st, 2015). RSC became the leader with 40% portion of Top10 systems and among all Russian HPC vendors in the rating. RSC has 9 supercomputers in Russian Top50 list – three in Moscow (two at the Joint Supercomputer Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, JSCC RAS; one at Russian Hydrometeorological Agency, Roshydromet), two in Saint Petersburg (at St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University, SPbSPU), two in Chelyabinsk (at South Ural State University, SUSU), one in Dolgoprudny (at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, MIPT) and one in Volgograd (at Volgograd State Technical University, VSTU).

The Russian Top50 list contains two new RSC supercomputer systems developed for one of the largest and most innovative Russian data centers at the St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University (SPbSPU). Polytechnic RSC Tornado cluster system made the 3rd place in the rating with LINPACK performance of 658 Teraflops. New SPbSPU supercomputer based on the RSC Tornado cluster architecture with direct liquid cooling has the peak performance of 829 Teraflops. It is the first project in Russia and CIS based on the latest Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 server processors.

Polytechnic RSC Tornado includes 712 dual-processor nodes containing 1424 high-performance Intel Xeon E5-2697 v3 server processors (14 cores, 2.6 GHz frequency each), Intel S2600KP and Intel S2600WT server boards for this processor generation, and the latest Intel SSD DC S3500 solid-state drives for enterprise data centers. Resources of this supercomputer are destined not only to solve relevant scientific tasks but also to provide cloud computing, VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) and graphical services.

The second part of the new hybrid HPC complex at SPbSPU contains a unique ultra high-density massively-parallel RSC PetaStream system with direct liquid cooling and total performance of 258 Teraflops. Polytechnic RSC PetaStream supercomputer has demonstrated LINPACK performance of 170.5 Teraflops and has 8th position in the current edition of the Top50 list. This SPbSPU system developed and produced by RSC specialists in Russia is based on 60-core Intel Xeon Phi 5120D coprocessors and Intel Xeon E5-2600 v2 family processors with Intel server boards and Intel SSD DC S3500 solid-state drives for enterprise data centers.

Polytechnic RSC Tornado and Polytechnic RSC PetaStream are combined into a single HPC solution at SPbSPU supercomputer center with high-speed Infiniband FDR interconnect network. The total peak performance of this HPC solution is 1.1 Petaflops.

Another new MVS-10P MP supercomputer based on RSC PetaStream massively-parallel architecture with direct liquid cooling has been installed by RSC specialists at the Joint Supercomputer Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (JSCC RAS). It is the first project in Russia and CIS based on high-performance Intel Xeon Phi 7120D coprocessors. MVS-10P MP supercomputer at JSCC RAS took 20th place in the new edition of the local Top50 list. MVS-10P MP is based on RSC PetaStream massively-parallel architecture using the following Intel server products: 61-core Intel Xeon Phi 7120D processors, Intel Xeon E5-2600 family processors, Intel server boards and Intel SSD DC S3500 solid-state drives for enterprise data centers.

The new MVS-10P MP system has expanded JSCC RAS computing resources that are still based on MVS-10P supercomputer developed on RSC Tornado cluster architecture with direct liquid cooling. This supercomputer deployed by RSC in 2012 still occupies the 4th position at the local Top50 list. The total peak performance of liquid-cooled RSC supercomputers at JSCC RAS now exceeds 600 Teraflops.

Other RSC systems in the local Top50 list: RSC Tornado SUSU (6th place), another HPC system at SUSU (13th position), MIPT (Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology) cluster (17th place), RSC Tornado cluster system at Roshydromet (37th position) and a system at the Electronics and Computing Department of the Volgograd State Technical University (VSTU) made 49th place.

It has to be noted that RSC Group became one of the Top10 wordwide supercomputer vendors, according to the latest edition of the Top500 list (www.top500.org, November 2014). For the first time, the Russian company has achieved the 9th place among the world leading supercomputer vendors after doubling its presence in Top500 rating to four systems. RSC Group is leading among Russian supercomputer vendors with 44% share of all Russian HPC systems in the Top500 list. Total peak performance of RSC systems in the Top500 rating has exceeded 2 Petaflops. Current edition of the Top500 list includes 9 supercomputers from Russia.
