Appro, a provider of high-performance enterprise computing systems has announced that Appro HyperBlade Clusters have been recognized as among the world's fastest supercomputers, according to results from the Linpack benchmark. The Appro HyperBlade Cluster at the Performance and Architecture Laboratory (PAL) at Los Alamos National Laboratory, reached a Linpack benchmark performance of 3.4 teraflops per second.
The Appro HyperBlade Cluster solution is powered by dual-core AMD Opteron processors configured in 2-socket 256 nodes for a total of 1024 cores. The cluster is running Linux and is connected by a Voltaire InfiniBand switch. This cluster reflects the growing trend in supercomputing toward standards-based systems configured in clusters to address sophisticated computing needs. Right on schedule, Intel has launched its Xeon 5600 processors, codenamed "Westmere EP." The 5600 represents the 32nm sequel to the Xeon 5500 (Nehalem EP) for dual-socket servers.
