SC07 Panels: From Quantum Computing to Exotic Architectures


RENO, Nev., Oct. 11 -- How does one celebrate the 50th birthday of the most popular programming language in supercomputing? Industry experts in high performance computing, communications and storage technologies will explore this question and others in a handful of select panels at SC07 in Reno, Nev., Nov. 10-16, 2007.

Sponsored by ACM and the IEEE Computer Society, SC07 showcases the latest advances in high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis. The SC07 panels program has assembled a stellar list of industry experts from various disciplines to offer diverse points of view on many exciting topics that are both relevant and timely in today's world of supercomputing.

This year's panels will bring together the brightest minds in science and technology to deal with the issues of applying advanced computing technologies to drive science and improve business competitiveness. The panel program features 7 panel sessions that were selected from 22 proposals. As in previous years, these sessions are expected to trigger lively and even passionate debate.

The Fifty Years of Fortran panel will commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the first Fortran compiler release by examining the impact it has had on system software, applications and computer architecture. Panelists David Padua from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Henry M. Tufo of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, John Levesque of Cray, Inc, and Richard Hanson from Visual Numerics, Inc will offer a brief look at the future of Fortran program. Frances Allen, IBM Emerita, moderates the panel.

In addition to the Fortran panel, experts will explore:

  • The Return of the HPC Survivor -- how to outwit, outlast and outcompute.

  • Supercomputing with Exotic Architectures -- how to use FPGAs, GPUs, game processors and other non-conventional approaches to computing.

  • Operating system wars: What is the right kernel for your supercomputer?

  • Quantum computing: What is happening in this revolutionary field?

  • How to Get a Better Job in Computing -- and Keep It!

  • HEC energy crisis: How shall we cope with a world in which computing is limited by power consumption?

SC07, sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society and the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Computer Architecture (ACM SIGARCH), will showcase how high-performance computing, networking, storage and analysis lead to advances in research, education and commerce.
