OSLO, July 9 -- The KnowARC project brings Globus packages to Debian Linux, paving the way for many Grid projects to be included in the popular distribution.
In the field of grid computing, Globus is a major brand. One of the earliest grid middleware solutions, the Globus Tookit is not only a popular middleware flavour, but it also offers important building blocks for many other grid solutions. Among these is the Advanced Resource Connector (ARC), widely used in Europe and maintained by the NorduGrid Collaboration and the KnowARC project. ARC relies on a number of Globus libraries in their production-quality middleware, notably the Grid Security Infrastructure and file transfer libraries.
"One of our goals is to have ARC included in major Linux distributions such as Debian," says KnowARC Project Director Farid Ould-Saada from Oslo University. "Our middleware already runs on nearly every flavour of Linux including Debian, but inclusion into the Debian distribution will make it even easier for users to get set up with ARC."
To achieve this, ARC needs some Globus packages to be integrated into Debian, so ARC developers began porting the Globus packages required for the ARC middleware and submitting them to Debian earlier this year.
"It was easier than we expected," says lead-programmer Mattias Ellert from Uppsala University in Sweden, "We had some technical assistance from the Globus team in the US, and in general it has gone very smoothly. Next we want to port the same packages to Windows as well as submitting ARC itself to Debian."
ARC is not the only middleware making use of Globus packages, other major solutions such as the US Virtual Data Toolkit and the EGEE projects gLite middleware rely on Globus.
"This work provides Debian users with convenient access to Globus capabilities such as public key security, GridFTP data transfer and the Replica Location Catalog for data management," commented Ian Foster, Globus project leader. "This broadening of the Globus user community is very exciting."
