WALTHAM, Mass., Sept. 22 -- Interactive Supercomputing Inc. (ISC) announced its Star-P software will support Microsoft's Windows HPC Server 2008. These technologies can make high performance computing ubiquitous, affordable and much easier to use for a wider range of technical computing users.
Star-P is an application development platform that allows scientists, engineers and analysts to code algorithms and models on their Windows desktops using familiar mathematical software packages such as The MathWorks' MATLAB or Python, and run them instantly and interactively on parallel clusters and servers running Windows HPC Server 2008. It eliminates the need to re-program in complex languages like C or FORTRAN, or use MPI (message passing interface) to run in parallel, which squelches user productivity and time-to-discovery.
A preview version of Star-P for Windows HPC Server 2008 is being demoed this week at the 2008 High Performance on Wall Street Conference in New York City. A commercial version is expected to ship later this year.

Microsoft's Windows HPC Server 2008 combines the power of the Windows Server platform with out-of-the-box functionality to improve the productivity and reduce the complexity of HPC environments. Windows HPC Server 2008 can efficiently scale to thousands of processing cores and provides a comprehensive set of deployment, administration, and monitoring tools that are easy to deploy, manage, and integrate into existing infrastructures.
"Most of our customers use Windows on their desktops, for many server based functions, and are already skilled in management and administration of Windows operating systems," said David Rich, ISC vice president of marketing. "Star-P running on Windows HPC Server 2008 will make it seamless and easy for them to harness the power for parallel computing through a familiar Windows environment without requiring specialized training or skills."

Right on schedule, Intel has launched its Xeon 5600 processors, codenamed "Westmere EP." The 5600 represents the 32nm sequel to the Xeon 5500 (Nehalem EP) for dual-socket servers.
