Mellanox and Partners Demo Lustre File System at SC08

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 18 -- SC08 -- Mellanox Technologies, Ltd., a leading supplier of semiconductor-based, server and storage interconnect products, today announced a multi-vendor 10 Gigabit Ethernet file system and storage infrastructure demonstration using a 10Gb/s Low Latency Ethernet (LLE) cluster network using Lustre technology for computational checkpointing and persistent visualization data storage. The demonstration includes the following vendor components: Mellanox - ConnectX EN 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapters, Arista Networks - 7124 10 Gigabit Switches, Sun Microsystems - Lustre file system and Sun Fire X4540 storage server, System Fabric Works - software integration and demonstration deployment.

"Employing this kind of technology allows us to explore and develop the petascale computing capabilities vital to our future research endeavors and advances high performance computing."

"End-users are looking for improved application latency and performance for their compute intensive applications, faster access to storage, and reduced complexity of their 10 Gigabit Ethernet deployment," said Sash Sunkara, vice president of marketing at Mellanox Technologies. "By deploying Mellanox ultra low-latency ConnectX EN 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapters with support for Data Center Ethernet, FCoE offload, and SR-IOV, end-users can achieve record 10 Gigabit Ethernet application and latency performance while reducing their overall infrastructure."

"Arista offers the industry's best-of-breed 10 Gigabit Ethernet switching platforms, redefining latency, scalability, resilience, and price–performance," said Mansour Karam, director of business development at Arista Networks. "Our pioneering new software architecture, with self-healing and live in-service upgrade capabilities combined with non-blocking wire-speed 10 Gigabit throughput, makes the Arista 7100 series ideally suited for storage and compute intensive applications."

"The Lustre file system with 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Linux and the Sun Fire X4540 Open Storage Server provides a wide range of configurability with the highest end-to-end data integrity available," said Hanxi Chen, open storage product manager at Sun Microsystems. "This architecture can easily accommodate growth as LLNL's petascale storage requirements scale up," said Kevin Canady, director of Lustre Business Development at Sun Microsystems. "Lustre's parallel I/O and the emerging speed up of Ethernet can provide savings in cost and rack space of 50 percent, compared to other approaches."

"Our experience with multi-gigabit networks, open storage platforms and open source operating systems made the software integration for this demonstration very successful," said Bob Pearson, CEO of System Fabric Works. "Implementing this demonstration on the Open Fabrics network within SCinet at SC08 presages the innovative architectures that 10 and 40 Gigabit Ethernet promise for high performance computing applications."

This demonstration also highlights the multi-vendor relationships with LLNL which is exploring the integration of multiple vendors' network and storage components at high-bandwidths as they will be tested and operated with advanced experimental topologies, routing software and storage server architectures. These topologies and software innovations are intended to allow LLNL to scale its site-wide filesystems for multi-petaFLOP systems with increasing network speeds, adapter capabilities and storage system architectures.
