"Today you buy Tylenol (500mg for almost everyone), but it doesn’t positively impact everybody because genetically we are all different,” says Rajiv Nema, Director of Marketing at SAP (HANA, Mobile Innovations). “$70B is spent on cancer medicine in the United States alone, and 40% – almost $30B – of that is wasted because the medicine does not positively impact the patient. The SC12 technical forum schedule is impressive for the quality and depth of content and the sheer scope of subjects covered, however this same depth and scope can make it daunting to wade through. For that reason, HPC in the Cloud has pared the list down to the sessions that promise the most relevance to the HPC cloud and grid computing community. Read more…

Three is an amazing number, being the first odd prime number, the number of days in a typical long weekend and the largest number still written with as many lines as the number represents in languages that use glyphs such as Mandarin. Perhaps what is not so well known is the relationship between the number 3 and Grid Engine. Let’s consider the top 3 relationships of the number 3 and Grid Engine in this article. Read more…

Like most business savvy customers, Tata Steel Automotive Engineering continuously monitors operational costs in an effort to guarantee they are receiving quality solutions, at cost-effective prices. When Tata Steel originally sought a workload management solution, Grid Engine was the perfect fit as an open-source solution. However, self-support solutions often contain hidden costs and risks, which lead TSAE to evolve from an open source solution to a commercial product with commercial support and an open source core, from Univa Corporation. Data centers are experiencing increasing power consumption, space constraints and cooling demands due to the unprecedented computing power required by today’s chips and servers. HVAC cooling systems consume approximately 40% of a data center’s electricity. These systems traditionally use air conditioning, air handling and fans to cool the data center facility and IT equipment, ultimately resulting in high energy consumption and high carbon emissions. Data centers are moving to direct liquid cooled (DLC) systems to improve cooling efficiency thus lowering their PUE, operating expenses (OPEX) and carbon footprint.
This paper describes how CoolIT Systems (CoolIT) meets the need for improved energy efficiency in data centers and includes case studies that show how CoolIT’s DLC solutions improve energy efficiency, increase rack density, lower OPEX, and enable sustainability programs. CoolIT is the global market and innovation leader in scalable DLC solutions for the world’s most demanding computing environments. CoolIT’s end-to-end solutions meet the rising demand in cooling and the rising demand for energy efficiency.
Divergent Technologies developed a digital production system that can revolutionize automotive and industrial scale manufacturing. Divergent uses new manufacturing solutions and their Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPS™) software to make vehicle manufacturing more efficient, less costly and decrease manufacturing waste by replacing existing design and production processes.
Divergent initially used on-premises workstations to run HPC simulations but faced challenges because their workstations could not achieve fast enough simulation times. Divergent also needed to free staff from managing the HPC system, CAE integration and IT update tasks.
