SGI ERI Installation Illustrates Multi-use HPC

May 20, 2015 |

Traditional research and Big Data apps are increasingly run on the same HPC system as lines between their computational requirements blur and demand for dual-use capability grows, said Bob Braham, SGI CMO. He pointed to last month’s ramp up of the latest SGI supercomputer at the Earthquake and Volcano Information Center at the University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Read more…

Trans-Continental InfiniBand Charts Exascale Course

Feb 3, 2015 |

Many nations are racing to cross the exascale computing finish line by roughly 2020. Yet the challenges are such that establishing useful exascale computers some 50-100 times faster than today’s leadership machines requires the coordinated efforts of a vast array of stakeholders. At Supercomputing 2014 (SC14), an industry collaboration called InfiniCortex launched with the goal Read more…

Top 500 Interconnect History Highlights Ethernet Trends

Nov 19, 2013 |

As we related earlier when the news of the Top 500 rankings broke this morning, this November’s SC list was a rather static one in terms of the top ten systems. While this isn’t entirely unexpected since it was not likely anyone would usurp China’s dominance and since there were no big processor movements in Read more…

Considerations in HPC Cluster Network Selection

Jul 17, 2013 |

There’s a lot going on in the networks of HPC clusters, and selecting the right network fabric, equipment, and topology is important to ensuring good performance for given applications. A “one size fits all” approach rarely works, and architects will do well to tailor the network to the needs of the application.

Infiniband Snaps Up Strong Super Share

Jul 8, 2013 |

Infiniband carried a slight majority of the Top 500 share this year at ISC, a trend that Mellanox says will continue, both in HPC and beyond. We discussed IB’s reach and efficiencies with the company’s Gilad Shainer to better understand where Ethernet and Infinband are…

Why Big Data Needs InfiniBand to Continue Evolving

Apr 1, 2013 |

Increasingly, it’s a Big Data world we live in. Just in case you’ve been living under a rock and need proof of that, a major retailer can use an unimaginable number of data points to predict the pregnancy of a teenage girl outside Minneapolis before she gets a chance to tell her family. That’s just one example, but there are countless others that point to the idea that mining huge data volumes can uncover gold nuggets of actionable proportions (although sometimes they freak people out…)
