CPU March Madness Ends with Intel Nehalem EX Launch

In what has become one of the busiest months ever for CPU introductions, Intel got its final say on Tuesday with the launch of its much-anticipated Nehalem EX. The new processor line encompasses the Xeon 7500 and 6500 series and will be the basis for shared memory SMP systems from dozens of server makers, including HPC stalwarts like Cray, SGI, and Bull.

SGI Colors New Shared Memory Machines Ultraviolet

After what may be the longest development cycle ever for a supercomputer, SGI has unveiled the first commercial implementation of its Ultraviolet architecture. The company first announced “Project Ultraviolet” at SC03. Now six years later, it has launched Altix UV, the company’s first scale-up HPC system based on x86 technology.

ScaleMP Adds Cloud and Switchless Cluster Offerings

ScaleMP has added two new virtual SMP products to its lineup: a dynamic cloud provisioning offering and a new switchless entry-level product for four-node clusters. Both are based on the company’s vSMP Foundation technology, a software solution that turns x86 clusters into virtual SMP machines.

3Leaf Launches Virtual SMP Platform

Startup 3Leaf Systems has launched its first product offering, the Dynamic Data Center Server (DDC-Server). It is a combination of silicon and software that pools server CPU and memory into dynamically-sized virtual servers. Essentially it aggregates hardware resources so that a cluster farm can be turned into one or more SMP systems.
