Mountain View, Calif. -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Sybase, Inc. recently announced the first benchmark results for SQL Server 11. The result represents a new performance record on the Sun platform for the Transaction Processing Performance Council Benchmark C (TPC-C) for UNIX servers by posting a rate of 4544.60 transactions per minute (tpmC) at a price/performance of $396 per tpmC demonstrating the scalability achieved by the two companies, the companies said in a release. The tests for Sybase SQL Server 11 were conducted on Sun's SPARCcenter 2000E server, with 16 processors running on the Solaris TM 2.4 symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) operating environment. Five Sun SPARCstorage Array disk storage subsystems, with a total storage of 320 gigabytes, were used for the database. Sybase SQL Server 11 delivers 3.5 times the performance achieved previously with Sybase SQL Server 10. "As evidenced by these results, SQL Server 11 is an ideal relational database for scalable, SMP environments," said Carl Stolle, director of server marketing, Sun Microsystems Computer Company. "Sun has been especially impressed with the overall quality of SQL Server 11, and has been working closely with Sybase to ensure the highest levels of reliability and performance on Sun SPARCserver systems." "Our goal is to establish Sybase's performance leadership on SMP configurations," said Dennis McEvoy, vice president, enterprise products division at Sybase. "Sybase has achieved a new level of performance and scalability on 16 processors and will continue to optimize Sybase 11 to deliver higher throughput on Sun's industry leading SMP architecture." TPC-C Benchmark The TPC-C benchmark simulates an order entry environment for a warehouse operation. The benchmark has gained broad industry acceptance because it is considered to be similar to "real-world" processing. By simulating the activities found in complex Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) application environments, the TPC-C benchmark exercises a system's breadth of components associated with such environments.
