Fujitsu Launches the FireWire 1.3GB MO Drive

September 10, 1999

NEWS BRIEFS

London, England — Fujitsu Europe Ltd, a leading storage manufacturer launches a new dimension in Magneto-Optical removable storage, the world’s first Firewire 3.5-inch 1.3GB MO drive, available on the European market from October 1999. The DynaMO 1300FE external subsystem intended for both Macintosh and PC market is suitably designed with a sleek, half-translucent body with metallic silver covers.

FireWire interface, originally designed by Apple and now an official industry standard (IEEE 1394), is ideal for use with high-speed peripherals and is particularly suited towards multi-media devices. With the recent explosion of data intensive professional and multi-media applications, the demand for a removable storage device has become more apparent. The addition of a FireWire MO drive enhances the Fujitsu DynaMO range to fulfil this requirement. Fujitsu’s new FireWire MO drives offer greater ease of use in addition to the advantages of MO such as high levels of data integrity, media ruggedness and superior performance.

Ryo Nagano, Director of European Marketing at Fujitsu Europe Ltd commented: “By combining the capacity, performance and reliability on a 1.3GB MO drive and the ultimate ease of use of a FireWire interface, the DynaMO 1300FE is positioned as the ideal removable storage solution that high-end G3 Mac users have come to expect. Launching the world’s first FireWire MO, Fujitsu is re-writing the multi- media storage market and delivering a powerful solution for both creative professionals and home users.

The benefits of the new products include:

— Easy to Use – just ‘plug and play’

Connecting the new drives to a computer is as easy as plugging in a phone. Because the drives are compatible with Firewire’s ‘Hot Plug’ interface, no device ID, DIP settings or terminators need to be configured making connection to computers both quick and easy. You don’t even have to restart the computer. The DynaMO 1300FE comes with device drivers for both the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition operating systems.

— High Capacity and High Performance – performing well for professional use or pleasure

With the drives using removable disks capable of holding up to 1.3GB of information and internal data transfer rates of up to 5.9MB per second, MO offers people an ideal storage medium for both professional and leisure applications.

— Sleek, Portable Design – easy on the eye and on the move

Knowing the importance of producing aesthetically pleasing, ergonomic products, the Fujitsu drives complement the look of the Apple G3 system, matching the translucent bodywork, silver and metallic covers and the generally sleek, futuristic look. Not much bigger than a video tape, they can easily be transported and installed on different systems dependent on the need.

The Fujitsu DynaMO 1300FE uses 1.3GB GIGAMO standard 3.5-inch disks and has full read and write compatibility with all 128MB, 230MB, 540MB and 640MB ISO compliant 3.5-inch MO disks. This range of media capacities is the widest available on the market for a single drive and no other removable device can offer such flexible capacity options.

GIGAMO standard 3.5-inch 1.3GB disks are also available from leading media manufacturers such as SONY and PDO. ISO standard 3.5-inch disks are also available from many leading manufacturers.
