Boulder, CO — Visual Numerics, Inc., a developer of data visualization, numerical analysis and Internet software solutions, announced that it has successfully completed a 13 month consulting engagement for Long Beach, Calif.-based Boeing Commercial Aircraft Co.
The work was perform by Visual Numerics’ Consulting Services Group, a team of experienced software engineers and programmers. The group provides custom software solutions to customers with limited application development resources and/or expertise. Working closely with the customer, Consulting Services provides consulting from the earliest stages of project definition through deployment.
Beginning in late 1997, Visual Numerics’ technical consultants worked side-by-side with Boeing through system design, development, implementation, and deployment of an integrated flight test data processing system, of which Visual Numerics’ PV-WAVE software is an integral component. The data processing application was used to analyze in-flight test data and was deployed both on ground systems and on-board the test aircraft. The first usage of this application was September 2, 1998, during the inaugural test flight of Boeing’s 717, the new 100-seat short-haul airliner.
Boeing was so pleased with the technical support it received from Visual Numerics employee John Bee that it recognized him as an “Employee of the Month.” John Coakley, manager of Boeing’s Flight Test Software Group, said, “While it is highly unusual to give a non-Boeing employee the ëEmployee of the Month’ award, John’s efforts extended far beyond our expectations and truly show his pride and ownership in the Flight Test Data Processing System.”
“Through the Consulting Services Group, Visual Numerics is able to provide software solutions to industry-specific business problems on a worldwide basis,” said Don Kainer, vice president of Marketing and Technology at Visual Numerics. “The Boeing project is a perfect example. When Boeing required technical support on its new flight test data processing system, they came to us because they could not afford the time of using internal resources for development. Working with Boeing flight test engineers, we applied our expertise with PV-WAVE to deliver the customized solution they needed.”
PV-WAVE, Visual Numerics’ flagship product, is an array-oriented fourth-generation programming language (4GL) used by engineers, scientists, researchers, business analysts, and software developers to easily build and deploy visual data analysis (VDA) applications. These applications let users visualize and manipulate complex or extremely large technical datasets to detect and display patterns, trends, anomalies, and other vital information. The software includes hundreds of mathematical and statistical routines from the IMSL Numerical Libraries, as well as image processing, signal processing, mapping, and data manipulation features.
“Having Visual Numerics build a solution is well-worth the cost,” said Don Boughey, the company’s manager of Consulting Services. “Our core competencies are in numerical analysis and data visualization — it’s what we do. Our consultants add expertise to the unique abilities of in house staff. We provide the solid foundation, in both products and services, that let the customer deploy the right solution to end-users.”
