NEWS BRIEFS
Campbell, CA — HAL Computer Systems, Inc., a Fujitsu Ltd. subsidiary, today announced availability of three new additions to the family of Fujitsu SPARC64 servers for North America. The GP7000F servers are SPARC V9 compliant, Oracle8I certified and are fully compatible with Sun Catalyst applications.
With Fujitsu’s added RAS (Reliability, Accessibility and Serviceability) features, these aggressively priced systems offer excellent price/performance for mission critical applications.
The GP7000F Model 200R rack mount Solaris server is an entry-level system that can be easily upgraded to dual SPARC64 processors and 4 gigabytes of memory. The system comes ready to install in racks meeting 19″ EIA specifications. The Model 200R complements the GP7000F Model 200 desk side, announced earlier this year.
The GP7000F Model 400 supports up to four processors and is available in both a rack mount and floor model. Like the rack mount Model 200R, the rack mount Model 400R is ready for installation in 19″ EIA compatible racks. All multi-processor configurations are SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) and can handle a wide range of PCI devices, RAID and networking connections.
The Model 400 can be configured with up to 8 gigabytes of memory and 22 internal hot-swap hard disk drives. All models are available with 248 MHz or 272 MHz CPUs and up to 8 MBytes of L2 cache. A 296 MHz CPU upgrade is scheduled for release later this summer.
The GP7000F features a PCI device bus and is equipped with enhanced RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability) features. The GP7000F offers an advanced SCF (system control facility) that monitors the system status, reporting potential failures and malfunctions. Hot-swap tape and disk drives, optional dual hot-swap power supplies and the use of ECC protection for both main memory and cache, make the GP7000F ideally suited for database applications.
The GP7000F family uses the Fujitsu SPARC64 superscalar, super-pipelined processor designed and manufactured by Fujitsu. At 272 MHz, the highly efficient GP7000F delivers 17.6 SPECint95 (estimated), 26.6 SPECfp95 (estimated) and 816 MFLOPS (million floating-point operations per second). In the near future Fujitsu will offer faster SPARC64 processors, larger SMP configurations, enhanced High Availability features, and high performance interconnect technology that will support System Area Networks.
The GP7000F is fully compatible with Sun Catalyst listed SPARC/Solaris applications. A full suite of application development tools, including compilers, libraries and code management applications is available for the entire GP7000F family.
HAL also announced the early availability of the HAL SL100, a new single processor UltraSPARC powered low-profile rack mount Solaris server. Built to HAL’s specifications, the SL100 is based on the SPARCengine Ultra AXi system board. The SL100 is compact, measuring just 2U (3.5″) high by 19.25″ deep and fits a standard 19″ rack. The SL100 features dual hard disk drives, up to one gigabyte of main memory and processor speeds up to 440 MHz.
The SL100 has successfully passed stringent tests for Fujitsu class reliability and quality. In addition to being very competitive in price, HAL also expects the SL100 to be a very stable platform, offering a new, higher level of price competitiveness and reliability.
The SL100 extends HAL’s product line to include very low-cost Solaris servers in dense vertical packaging. The SL100 is an ideal choice for Internet service providers and firewall applications. Available in limited quantity now, the SL100 is scheduled for volume shipment by mid-October.
