NEWS BRIEFS
Palo Alto, CA — Hewlett-Packard Company announced it is the first server vendor to ship Gigabit Ethernet over copper (1000Base-T) host bus adapters. The HP 1000Base-T LAN adapter, now available worldwide for HP 9000 PCI-based servers, provides 1000Mbit/s bandwidth over existing copper wire, meeting the demands of e-commerce and data-intensive businesses that want to preserve their investments in existing Ethernet infrastructures.
Because a vast number of networked businesses already use Category 5 copper wiring, businesses could save thousands of dollars in infrastructure costs.
“We are pleased to announce industry-leading networking solutions for HP 9000 servers. Due to superior PCI and systems design, these servers can provide full link speed Gigabit Ethernet performance,” said Mark Hudson, senior director of marketing for HP’s Business Critical Computing Business Unit.
In addition to providing link speed Gigabit Ethernet performance, the HP adapter supports both the Category 5 and Category 5e (enhanced) cabling standards, further providing superior investment protection in existing cabling infrastructure. The adapter automatically detects among 10/100/1000Base-T networks so that it may be deployed immediately in any Ethernet environment.
The HP 1000Base-T LAN adapter is also supported by HP’s Auto-Port Aggregation (APA) software. Up to 32 100Base-T or 1000Base-T links can be logically aggregated to form a single, extremely high bandwidth channel with one IP address. APA automatically provides load balancing and link failover. HP is also the first to support Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP), the IEEE 802.3ad standard for automatic configuration of link aggregation.
At the heart of HP’s superior networking performance is the HP 9000 Enterprise Server family, the workhorses providing unprecedented levels of computing performance, availability, security and manageability for the Internet Age. The advanced PCI subsystem design coupled with high-performance networking adapters promise the speed, reliability and scalability to keep pace with the growth in e-business and other data-intensive applications, including video, multimedia, database backups and graphics.
