NEWS BRIEFS
New York, N.Y. — IBM announced that its new RS/6000 M80 Unix server with eight copper chips has broken its fifth benchmark performance record. In independent tests, an 8-way RS/6000 Model M80 scaled to 28,032 concurrent Lotus Notes mail users, twice as many as the Compaq (NYSE: CPQ) ProLiant 8500. The M80’s record-breaking performance on NotesMark and other benchmarks measuring Java performance, Web serving, and transaction processing have quickly demonstrated the new system’s flexibility and ability to handle rigorous e-business workloads.
The ability of a single server to handle large numbers of mail users is becoming more important as IT managers seek ways to better manage their infrastructures at a lower cost.
Running the same benchmark, the Compaq Proliant 8500 scaled to 14,000 users on an equivalent workload, half the number of users supported by the M80. A Sun E450 scaled to only 7,500 users.
“The scalability of the RS/6000 M80 system on this key benchmark demonstrates the capabilities of Lotus software for messaging and collaboration when paired with IBM’s industry-leading server technology,” said Scott Firth, manager of product marketing for IBM Web Servers.
“The fact that the M80 has quickly broken performance records for e-business applications speaks to the unmatched performance, versatility and investment protection of these new copper-infused RS/6000 midrange servers.”
Pioneered by IBM researchers, copper microprocessor technology adds immense value. Smaller, denser, faster and cooler than their aluminum counterparts, copper chips are also more reliable and less expensive to manufacture.
The M80 is part of IBM’s new RS/6000 midrange Unix server line. Available in flexible rack and stack or deskside configurations, the RS/6000 M80, H80 and F80 offer immense power and scalability for both dot-coms and traditional corporate data centers. The new Unix servers run AIX, IBM’s award-winning UNIX operating system, and are ideal for a wide range of mission-critical applications, including enterprise resource planning (ERP), web serving, business intelligence, customer relationship management (CRM) and supply chain planning.
