Mountain View, CA — The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) announced the availability of its new on-line Dictionary of Storage Networking Terminology.
Compiled through the cooperative efforts of the SNIA’s 150 member companies and individuals, the Dictionary presents standard definitions of nearly 1,000 commonly used terms as they are agreed upon by the leading participants in the storage industry.
The Dictionary, available now at http://www.snia.org/English/Resources/Dictionary.html , is a hypertext document of nearly 35,000 words which includes comprehensive definitions and internal links. It presents definitions for a broad range of storage terminology, including both technically detailed terms and higher level storage networking concepts.
“The Dictionary is the industry’s most comprehensive attempt to-date to capture in one easily accessible location all of the most important and wide-spread words and phrases associated with the storage industry,” explained Lawrence Krantz, chairman of the SNIA Board of Directors. “The Dictionary’s definitions of specific technical terms will be of most use to people dealing with technically detailed language. But we also included clearly phrased definitions of many widely used storage terms that will be invaluable for anyone interested in data storage trends and developments. The Dictionary’s ultimate goal is to make it easier to communicate about storage issues in order to further the continued expansion of storage networking.”
“In a dynamic industry segment like storage networking, terminology grows up along divergent paths since it is developed along with the technology in different organizations,” commented Paul Massiglia of VERITAS Software, who served as editorial director of the project. “In that environment, the Dictionary can serve as a catalyst for uncovering idiosyncratic language and encouraging agreement within the community.
“It is important to recognize that while we have made a very good beginning and have broad industry support for the project, we have not yet finished the task of creating uniform storage nomenclature. Work on the Dictionary will continue under the auspices of the SNIA’s Education Committee, and the document will become an even more valuable resource in the future.”
The SNIA is a not-for-profit organization, made up of more than 150 companies and individuals spanning virtually the entire storage industry. SNIA members share a common goal: to set the pace of the industry by ensuring that storage networks become efficient, complete, and trusted solutions across the IT community. To this end the SNIA is uniquely committed to delivering standards, education, and services that will propel open storage networking solutions into the broader market. The SNIA currently has multiple technical efforts underway. For more information visit the SNIA Web site at http://www.snia.org .
