San Jose, CA — SGI announced it has agreed to provide 105 units of its SGI Internet Server to MPLUS Technologies Inc. (MPLUS), a leading multimedia products manufacturer in Korea. MPLUS will use the SGI servers for building its Internet Data Center for Web hosting services.
SGI Internet Server is designed for the fast-growing Internet market. Based on the SGI 1200 server, SGI Internet Server is a low-cost, rack-and-stack solution combining the convenience of an appliance with the flexibility of an open system. SGI Internet Server includes Internet-specific management, monitoring and security tools with integrated basic services for Web serving and messaging. It comes preinstalled with Red Hat Linux 6.1 and SGI ProPack for Linux 1.2 and is equipped with one Intel Pentium III processor.
“We offer a full range of Internet hosting services, and what is the most important for our business is to be equipped with reliable and flexible servers,” said Bong-Hwan Oh, CEO of MPLUS. “By offering quick deployment, ease of installation and scalability, SGI Internet Server perfectly meets our requirements.”
Oh also noted, “One of the major reasons we chose SGI Internet Server is SGI ProPack for Linux, a high-quality performance enhancement toolkit. We believe it will greatly assist us in building a powerful Internet Data Center for reliable Web-hosting services.”
Yong-Dae Kim, country manager for SGI Korea, said, “With MPLUS, SGI Internet Server makes its debut in Korea as a Linux OS-based Web-hosting server, which we expect will cement our position in Internet serving as we continue to bring Media Commerce solutions to market here.”
The SGI 1200 server line is an ideal platform to support rapidly growing Internet server environments and technical computing clusters. Preinstalled Apache Web Server as well as SGI performance enhancements will provide a significant increase in performance for Web hosting environments.
MPLUS Technologies, Inc. was founded in 1990 as a VGA developer. The company has secured a 40% market share in Korea with multimedia products including virtual reality 3D MAX, a multimedia caption system, a high-speed fax modem, an MPEG-2 board, satellite receiver, a TV set-top box and cable modems. In a bid to emerge as a wireless Internet and network powerhouse, MPLUS is also pushing for the development of high-tech products: digital TV, Internet networking, a Linux OS-based thin server/client system, a PDA (personal digital assistant) and a voice/video telephone. The company recently extended its business to Internet hosting services.
